Little fire ant

Wasmannia auropunctata

Little fire ant (Wasmannia auropunctata) is an insect pest. It is a native of Central and South America and was first detected in Hawaii in 1999.

Several exotic ant species are known to have dramatic ecological impacts. When these ants invade, they disrupt the indigenous invertebrate fauna and can transform the entire biological community. They are also known for a painful sting.
