The approved survey method for Phytomyza gymnostoma is visual inspection for signs of damage in combination with collection of adults, if damage is observed. Other methods may be used in addition to visual inspection; however, visual inspection is the only method approved for negative data. Yellow sticky cards and water pan traps are used for monitoring and timing of insecticide applications in areas where the pest is established. However, in Pennsylvania, yellow sticky cards were not shown to be effective in capturing the flies compared to hand collection of adults. If you have the capability to rear larvae and pupae, you may do so. However, the spring-collected flies have been observed to have a dormant period from mid- to late May until hatch in late summer; flies collected in the fall would likely need to overwinter before hatch. Since identification is made from adult specimens, please make every effort to collect adults. By collecting adults in the field, identification will be expedited.
