Identification
ID/Diagnostic: Morphological
Morphological.
Mistaken Identities:
Y. malinellus is a part of the "padellus complex" which is made up of five species, including Y. padellus, Y. cagnagellus, Y. mahalebellus, Y. malinellus, and Y. rorellus. These species can be difficult to distinguish morphologically; other features including larval feeding preference and sex pheromones can be used to help distinguish between the different species. Larvae of Y. malinellus are identical to larvae of Y. padellus. Nests made by both of these species can be confused with nests of fall webworm and tent caterpillars
